We often apply for a PAN card years ago, and over time, details change. You might have moved to a new address, changed your surname after marriage, or simply noticed a spelling error in your father’s name. In the past, correcting these details meant filling out physical forms and standing in queues.
The good news? The Income Tax Department has fully digitized this process. Today, you can update your PAN card details from the comfort of your home using just your Aadhaar card.
Whether you need to fix a typo or update your photo, here is a complete step-by-step guide to PAN correction.
1. What Can You Correct Online?
You can request changes for almost any data point on your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card. The most common corrections include:
Name & Surname: (Crucial for spelling errors or legal name changes).
Date of Birth: (To match your other official documents).
Father’s Name: It is Mandatory for Men & Women (including Married Women)
Communication Address: (Vital to ensure you receive official tax notices).
Photo & Signature: (Recommended if your current PAN card has an old or blurry photo).
⚠️ The "Golden Rule" Before You Start
Check Your Aadhaar First.
If you are planning to use the paperless (e-KYC) mode, your PAN application will pull data directly from your Aadhaar.
Pro-Tip: If your name or Date of Birth is wrong on your Aadhaar card too, you must update your Aadhaar first. If the details do not match the Aadhaar database exactly, the PAN system will reject your application instantly.
2. Step-by-Step Online Process
Step 1: Visit the Official Portal
You can use either of the two authorized service providers. Both are equally valid:
Protean (formerly NSDL):
onlineservices.nsdl.com
Step 2: Select the Right Application Type
On the homepage, look for the "Application Type" dropdown and select:
"Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card"
Step 3: Fill the Form & Tick the Checkboxes
This is where most people make mistakes.
Fill in your correct details.
Crucial Step: On the left margin of the form, you will see small checkboxes next to every field (Name, DOB, etc.). You must tick the box corresponding to the detail you want to change.
Example: If you are only changing your Date of Birth, fill in all details, but only tick the box next to "Date of Birth."
Step 4: Choose Your Submission Mode
You will be offered three ways to verify your identity:
Digital (e-KYC & e-Sign): The fastest, 100% paperless method. It validates you via Aadhaar OTP. No need to upload photos.
Scanned Images via e-Sign: You upload a new photo and signature scan, but sign the application using Aadhaar OTP.
Physical: You print the acknowledgment, stick your photos, sign it, and courier it to the NSDL/UTIITSL office.
3. Fees & Charges (2025)
The cost depends on whether you want a physical card mailed to you or just a digital update (e-PAN).
| Card Type | Delivery Address | Approx. Fee (Incl. GST) |
| Physical Card | Within India | ₹107 – ₹110 |
| Physical Card | Outside India | ₹959 – ₹1,020 |
| e-PAN Only | Email Delivery | ₹66 – ₹72 |
4. Documents Required
If using e-KYC (Paperless): Your Aadhaar Card is usually sufficient as a single proof for Identity, Address, and Date of Birth.
If using Physical/Scanned Mode: You may need specific proofs depending on the correction:
For Name Change: Marriage Certificate, Gazetted Officer Certificate, or Official Gazette notification.
For DOB: Birth Certificate, Passport, or 10th Standard Marksheet.
For Address: Electricity Bill, Bank Statement, or Voter ID.
5. Timeline: When Will I Get It?
Verification: Once submitted, it takes 3–7 days for the department to verify your documents.
Delivery: Your updated physical PAN card typically arrives at your registered address within 10–15 business days.
